Car park to ease town centre traffic

A new car park on the site of a former derelict mill in Halifax town centre has opened to the public.

The joint venture between Yorkshire Forward and Calderdale Council will improve short stay town centre parking – catering for shoppers, residents and businesses. The 14 bay car park includes two bays for disabled drivers.

Graham Halliday, of Yorkshire Forward, said: "The additional spaces that the new car park provides will benefit residents and visitors by helping to alleviate traffic and parking issues in the town centre."

Lambert Smith Hampton (LSH) negotiated the purchase of the site and administered the demolition of the derelict building on behalf of Yorkshire Forward. LSH also oversaw construction works.

The 24 hour car park operates under Calderdale Council's Pay and Display regulations from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday, at 60p/hour with a maximum stay of four hours.

Calderdale Council's cabinet member, economy and environment, Cllr Amanda Byrne, said: "Projects such as this will draw people into Halifax so they can take advantage of the fantastic shopping facilities we have."
