Car slams into garden wall after road chase

At about 8.30pm on Wednesday, a black Volkswagen Bora being driven by a 22-year-old man failed to stop for police on Station Road in Thurnscoe.

Two marked white Ford Focus police cars with lights and sirens in action then began a chase.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “The Bora went around the wrong side of a mini traffic island for the junction of Station Road with Houghton Road, before the driver lost control and crashed into a garden wall on Houghton Road.

“The passengers in the Bora, two men in their late teens, sustained slight injuries and were taken to Barnsley District General Hospital but not detained.”

The driver of the Bora, who had to be cut from the car by fire crews, was taken to the same hospital with a broken leg and possible internal injuries. All three men are from Barnsley.

The police spokesman added: “The car was being stopped after a report of a theft from Barrowfield Road.

“Police would like to hear from anyone with information about an alleged theft on Barrowfield Road, the manner of driving of the Bora and the crash itself.”

Firefighters used cutting equipment to remove the roof of the car, and were at the scene until 10.15pm. Officers have asked anyone with information about either the theft or the crash to call them on 0114 220 2020.
