Car travellers create litter problem on the roads

ROADS, streets and even rural lanes in the East Riding are being increasingly littered as people throw rubbish out of their car windows.

The worst-affected roads are the A1079 from Hull to York, the A165 from Hull to Bridlington and the A614 from Bridlington to Howden.

Even unclassified country roads are now being affected, like Grange Road from North Frodingham and Miles Lane between Cherry Burton and Leconfield, according to the East Riding Council.

The council says there has been an increase in the number of complaints and officials on their rounds have also seen more rubbish.

Much of the increase is put down to people eating on the move, with cans, bottles and fast food packaging as well as crisp packets being among the most common types of litter.

Newspapers and carrier bags are also strewn on the roadsides, as well as plastic packaging.

The council says it will prosecute those who deliberately throw litter from their vehicles.

In the past 12 months the council has issued 24 fixed penalty notices, sent 70 warning letters and started two prosecutions.

People responsible for leaving litter could face a 75 fixed penalty notice or a court prosecution where the maximum penalty is 2500.

Last year, the council spent 3.2m cleaning the East Riding's highways, including litter picking.
