Care boost for town as health centre opens for business

A NEW health centre in Barnsley was officially opened on Saturday morning, a month after doctors moved into the newly built practice.

The Great Houghton Medical Centre includes facilities and services such as an ECG machine, a Warfarin clinic, Implanon fitting and removal, a new patient check-in facility and more consultation rooms so that the practice can accept additional patients.

There is also a new female GP, Adrienne Littlewood, so patients can specifically request to see a female doctor.

The director of estates and facilities at NHS Barnsley, Nick Phillips, said: “NHS Barnsley is extremely pleased that the Great Houghton Medical Centre has opened.

“The new building is a much-needed replacement for the previous health centre and will allow the residents of Great Houghton and surrounding areas to be treated in some of the best accommodation available within the health service.

“The construction of the new centre has been made possible by collaboration between NHS Barnsley and Barnsley Community Solutions, which has provided this and many other excellent facilities for the people of Barnsley.”

Mr Phillips added: “The new medical centre will also be introducing appointment booking online and prescription booking online.”
