Care home owners get hygiene alert warning

DIRTY bathrooms, stained carpets and poor hygiene standards in bedrooms have led to care home bosses being ordered to make immediate improvements following a snap inspection.

Residents who live in the Highgrove Care Home in West Road, Mexborough, near Doncaster, are considered to be at risk because of the lack of cleanliness, according to the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Staff from the regulator carried out an unannounced visit at the home on March 23, after receiving reports of problems with hygiene at the home, which has 78 rooms, and found that it was not meeting Government standards.

Owners Ladhar Healthcare (Yorkshire) have now been issued with a notice to make immediate improvements or face further action, which could include being forced to close the premises.

Inspectors said that during their visit they found that bathrooms, toilets, bedrooms and some communal areas were not being kept suitably clean.

Carpets were stained , furniture was dirty and the riles in some bathrooms were loose and falling off the walls, while many flooring areas were also dirty.

CQC operations head Amanda Sherlock , said: “The law says that these are the standards that everyone should be able to expect. Providers have a duty to ensure they are compliant.

“This warning sends a clear and public message that Ladhar Healthcare (Yorkshire) needs to address this issue as a matter of urgency or face serious consequences.

“Our inspectors will return to Highgrove Care Home in the near future and if we find that the provider is not making the required progress we won’t hesitate to use our legal powers to protect the people who live there.”

Despite being contacted, nobody from either Highgrove Care Home, or Ladhar Healthcare was available to respond to the CQC’s findings.
