Care home staff in stitches at manager’s knitting challenge

CARE home manager Heather Willis was hoping not to drop a stitch today after taking on the challenge of knitting for 16 hours solid to raise money for elderly residents.

Mrs Willis started her gruelling sponsored challenge at Park View Care Home in Shiregreen, Sheffield, at 6am and will knit non-stop until 10pm.

She said she had been collecting wool for weeks ahead of the challenge and hopes to use the money she raises to buy equipment to set up a gardening club at the home.

Speaking ahead of the challenge, Mrs Willis confessed that she was “not a great knitter”, and said the pattern was not too challenging because she planned to knit a scarf.

She added: “The residents and staff have said it’s reallt funny and are amazed that I’m doing it – they think it’s amazing.

“I will be fine at the beginning of the day but by the end I think I will be flagging. But they are a lovely team here and the residents are so nice so I know they will keep me going.

“It’s probably going to cripple my fingers and they will be so sore by 10pm but some of the residents have offered to step in so that I can have a break and something to eat.”

Mrs Willis said she wasn’t sure what she would do with the fininshed scarf and was open to offers to boost her fundraising.
