Carers invited to join support group

CARERS of people suffering mental illness are being urged to join a support network.

The Rethink Mental Illness’s Hull and East Yorkshire carers’ support service works to raise awareness of the role of carers and encourage them to have their views heard.

The service operates groups in Hull, Beverley and Goole as well as monthly drop-in sessions, and wants to highlight the support available during national carers’ week this week.

Terri Wilson, senior mental health recovery worker, said: “When people think of carers they often imagine those who look after the physically sick and disabled. We want to highlight that there are also hundreds of people out there who are caring for someone who has a mental illness.

“It is a role which is often overlooked, yet is just as challenging as the job of any other carer. We want to invite carers of people with a mental illness to come and meet us at one of our events where they will be able to find a network of support and friendly faces who understand the tough job they are doing.”
