Carers not guilty of ill-treating pensioners

A care home worker on trial for allegedly spitting in the face of an elderly woman has been cleared of all charges, along with two colleagues accused of offences against residents.

Hope Young, 18, was alleged to have spat at Margaret Castleton, who was in her 80s, at Green View House care home in Huddersfield, and it was claimed a number of other people in her care were ill-treated.

Her colleague Mark Senior, 28, was accused of putting his hand up resident Rosie Pearson’s skirt and suggesting they go away
together, Leeds Crown Court heard during the trio’s week-long trial.

Another carer, Louise Dent, 24, was alleged to have pushed resident Gwyneth Fowler after the pensioner nipped her and “struck her in the shoulder area”.

The three denied the allegations and were unanimously cleared of all charges by a jury yesterday, Dent and Young sobbing as
the jury foreman responded
with ‘not guilty’ verdicts for every count.

Senior, of Manchester Road, Linthwaite, Huddersfield, had denied 10 counts of ill-treating or neglecting persons who lack mental capacity, while Young, of Pennine View, Linthwaite, Huddersfield, denied eight similar charges, and Dent, 24, of Greenlea Court, Dalton, Huddersfield, denied one count of the same charge.

The home has now closed, the court heard.

The allegations related to 2010 and 2011.
