Carnival parade set to fill city streets with music and colour

MORE than 1,000 adults and children will take part in the Lord Mayor's Carnival Parade when it makes its way through Bradford city centre this weekend.

The streets will be awash with colour as it parades through the streets of Bradford on Saturday.

This year the parade celebrates the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity through the iconic image of the tiger.

The parade sets off from Northgate at noon and will be stopping for musical and dance performances along Darley Street and Bank Street.

For the first time the carnival parade will take place at the same time as the Lord Mayor's Civic Parade.

The Lord Mayor accompanied by councillors, senior council officers and representatives from partner organisations will attend the civic service at Bradford Cathedral and following the service will then parade to the city centre.

The two parades will then join at Hustlergate and will continue along Tyrrel Street before ending on Centenary Square.

Lord Mayor of Bradford Coun Peter Hill said: "This is a great city centre event and will be even more special this year by including the Civic Parade. I am particularly looking forward to taking part in what will be a fun event for the people of the city and district."

The Rev Paul Flowers, Bradford Council's executive member for culture, tourism and sport, said: "This is always a momentous event in Bradford's calendar and this year promises to be as vibrant as ever. I would encourage people to watch the parade as it makes its way through the streets of Bradford and consider the impact we have on the natural environment."

Pensioner Margaret Hardy of Huddersfield said she was looking forward to attending the event with her husband Bob.

She said: "I went last year and it was a wonderful day out, so colourful and vibrant and I'm hoping it will be just as good if not even better this time around as long as the weather stays fine.

"Bradford can look a little drab at times and sometimes seems full of nothing but building works and traffic diversions so it will be good to see it looking its best and decked out in all its glory.''
