Carnival relocates to town centre

BAD weather has forced the organisers of one of West Yorkshire’s largest outdoor events to relocate it to the town centre of Huddersfield.

Organisers have taken the decision to move the town’s festival, which takes place in July, amid fears the original location, Greenhead Park, will be too water-logged to stage the event.

The recent heavy rain has affected the arena where the main stage and some stalls would have been. As more rain is predicted over the next three weeks, the organisers have decided now to relocate the event and give themselves enough time to make alternative arrangements.

Huddersfield Carnival is one of the largest outdoor festivals in West Yorkshire, and it had been hoped that following a procession, events would return to Greenhead Park.

Coun Jean Calvert, the cabinet member for communities and leisure, said: “The carnival was held in the town centre last year and was a huge success, with many town centre businesses reporting better than usual sales.

“The carnival is an extremely popular event attracting local communities and visitors from across the country.

“The organisers have made a wise decision to relocate now rather than waiting to see if the weather improves and risking having to cancel at the last moment.”

The carnival is organised by Huddersfield African Caribbean Cultural Trust and Kirklees Council and is now in its 28th year.

A variety of stalls will be available, including a wide range of foods from around the world.

Following the decision to relocate the carnival, it is planned that a number of locations will be used in the town centre. Some will be in St George’s Square but other central locations will also be used.

More details will be released by organisers as soon as possible. The Huddersfield Carnival takes place on Saturday, July 14, from noon to 8pm.
