Cars cloned with stolen documents

The log books of thousands of cars have been cloned over the past two years after blank registration documents were taken, said the Association of Chief Police Officers.

Officers are working with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency to investigate the theft of the identities of 11,000 cars worth more than 13m.

Police are recovering around 10 faked log books each week, but up to 130,000 blank documents have yet to be found.

The papers, missing since 2006, allow criminals to “clone” any vehicle, making a stolen vehicle appear legitimate.
