Cars seized in insurance blackspot

Police seized 24 vehicles and issued almost 300 fixed penalty tickets in a clampdown on uninsured drivers in Bradford.

Officers also arrested 17 people during the four-month campaign focusing on road safety in the Manningham and Toller wards of the city.

The district has one of the worst records in the country for uninsured driving, according to insurance industry figures.

Most of the vehicles were seized because the drivers did not have the appropriate insurance cover.

Operation Serein, which ran between October and January, involved agencies including Bradford Council, Vehicle Operator Services Agency (VOSA), Hackney Carriages and HM Revenue and Customs.

A total of £1,000 in fines was also issued during the operation for vehicles found to be using red diesel.
