Cars still speeding through roadworks

MOTORISTS are continuing to speed through an area where workmen are constructing a new road layout ignoring warning signs and speed cameras, road safety watchdogs warned yesterday.

Safer Roads Humber is reminding drivers that temporary speed restrictions on the A1079 between Beverley and Hull, where a new roundabout is being built, have been put in place for the safety of all road users.

The speed cameras within the temporary 30mph zone were activated on September 27, more than a week after the correct signage was in place.

However, a number of drivers have been caught by the cameras travelling above the legally enforceable 30mph speed limit, according to Mick Harris, project manager for Safer Roads Humber.

He urged drivers to moderate their speed for their own safety, the safety of other road users, and the safety of those working at the site. He said: "The purpose of these cameras is to ensure safety and we would far rather catch no drivers at all exceeding the speed limit.

"Those speeding are putting their own lives, as well as those of road workers and other road users at risk while the work on the road layout and surface is carried out. We urge all motorists to slow down."
