Case study 4: Proposals are going to hit many

Ena and Trevor Dent have looked after their family sheep farm in North Yorkshire for more than 40 years.

But after diversifying into tourism, the couple fear they will not be able to stay afloat.

Mrs Dent, 60, who has built seven holiday cottages on her farm in Rosedale, Pickering, said: "Farming is not sustainable, we were encouraged by the government to diversify and now we are being punished for that.

"It cost a lot of money to set the business up and we wouldn't have been able to do it without the tax breaks.

"Now I devote most of my time to the holiday cottages, it is a full-time job and we both work very hard. Tourism is massive here but these proposals are going to hit so many people – who knows where the government will stop."
