Cash agreed for new park and ride at railway station

South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) has secured £400,000 from the Station Commercial Project Facility fund towards a 139-space car park on the site of a former garden nursery.

A new entrance to the car park and railway station is also proposed as part of the plans and a pedestrian crossing will be built on Abbeydale Road.

Construction of the car park, which gained planning permission from Sheffield Council in September, is set to start next year.

The car park will also include a covered bike shelter, in a bid to encourage cycling.

David Brown, director general of SYPTE, said: “This proposed facility will be a tremendous asset to the area around Dore, where people have been calling for some time for more parking spaces.

“We will now be working to ensure that this scheme is delivered as soon as possible to provide much-needed parking at the station for rail commuters.

The new Dore and Totley park and ride is one of a number of projects around the country which were successful in their bids to the £100m Station Commercial Project Facility fund.

Rail Minister Norman Baker said that the projects will “ensure that travelling on a train is a positive experience both during a journey and at the start and end of a trip.”

All projects to have received money from the fund must be complete by the end of March 2014.
