Cash boost on cards in cancer fight

Charlie Hardwick, better known as Emmerdale's Val Pollard, visits a Leeds University breast cancer research project to hand over a £25,000 donation on behalf of Hallmark Cards as part of its annual Cards for a Cure campaign for Mother's Day.

With her are Tamsyn Johnston-Hughes of Hallmark Cards, left, and Dr Deborah Holliday, project researcher at the university.

The Cards for a Cure campaign, in its fourth year, has now donated 1m to the Breast Cancer Campaign’s UK wide research projects and Action Breast Cancer, a programme of the Irish Cancer Society, since 2007. The research project is aimed at discovering more about what influences breast cancer development.

The project will help improve predictions of how a person’s disease will progress and ensure patients receive the most appropriate treatments to give them the best chance of survival.

Yesterday Charlie Hardwick visited St James’s University Hospital in Leeds to find out more about the research and to see how the donation will be spent.
