Cash boost for road and path repairs

A £1M boost to fixing roads and footpaths in York has begun to target areas where residents are fed up with shoddy surfacing and poor drainage.

Work to resurface the Stray Road in Heworth began yesterday and is expected to take two weeks. During the work the road will be closed to traffic from 9.15am to 4pm.

Coun Nigel Ayre said he was pleased work was getting under way to resurface the road.

He continued: "I have spoken to many residents about the problems with the surface of this road and I am very pleased that those problems will soon be addressed."

Work has been completed recently on Stockton Lane to reshape the verge to improve drainage as well as repairs to parts of the carriageway. Hazel Garth will also see damaged areas resurfaced later this year.

Coun Ayre added: "The work on Stray Road and Stockton Lane has been carried out thanks to the additional 1m included in the budget for highway maintenance.

"When the funding was agreed in the budget I was very keen to ensure that residents of Heworth Without would see the benefit and I pushed hard to ensure that both Stray Road and Stockton Lane were included in the programme."

In a recent survey carried out in Heworth Without by Coun Ayre, repairing roads and footpaths was identified as the top priority for council spending over the next few years.

The move comes as all local authorities tighten their belts due to spending cuts.

Coun Ayre said: "It is clear that local people think the condition of local roads and footpaths should be a key focus for the council and I will continue to work with the council and residents to improve local roads for the residents of Heworth Without."
