Cash to keep needy warm in winter

FINANCIALLY-stricken householders across the region are due to be given help to ensure they have heating this winter after the Government announced major funding packages.

Cash from the Department of Health’s Warm Homes Healthy People Fund has been allocated to local authorities, including Leeds City Council which has secured nearly £169,000. The money will be used to carry out boiler servicing and repairs, to ensure vulnerable people do not fall ill and have to be admitted to hospital.

Community groups will be able to bid for grants averaging £2,000 for projects.

Other local authorities which will benefit include East Riding Council, which received the full amount of £46,000. The cash will pay for heating in up to 30 homes, while a further 1,000 households will be fitted with cold weather alarms, telling them when they need to turn up their heating to maintain a healthy warmth.

Other funding will be used to increase the number of NHS staff able to provide fuel poverty and energy efficiency advice as well as holding extra events to recruit and train “energy champions”, for a project run by the Humber and Wolds Rural Community Council.
