Castle Howard playing host to Alice in Wonderland production

One of the country's most impressive stately home is to provide the backdrop for an outdoor production of Alice in Wonderland.

In the wake of Tim Burton's big screen adaptation which was released in March and starred Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, students from Leeds City College are staging the production of Lewis Carroll's novel in the grounds of Castle Howard in North Yorkshire. The students, studying for a BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts, have already raised 14,000 to pay for the large-scale production, although they still need to secure another 6,000.

The college's head of creative arts, Vivienne Razavilar, said: "I'm incredibly proud of what the students and staff have managed to achieve. This is the third major outdoor show that we have done at Castle Howard.

"Previous shows such as Toad of Toad Hall have been extremely popular with families."

Leeds City College came into being in April last year following the merger of Leeds College of Technology, Leeds Thomas Danby and Park Lane College Leeds and Keighley.

The production of Alice in Wonderland will be staged between May 22 and 31.

Tickets priced 15 and 10 for concessions and children are available from the box office on 0113 216 2232.
