Castle looks to lay some old ghosts

Supernatural investigators are set to lead two evenings at one of Barnsley's most famous country estates and staff said they hoped the events would unearth answers to some of the site's mysteries. Wentworth Castle, above, has a chequered history and was bought by Thomas Wentworth in 1708.

At the time it was called Stainborough Hall, but he embarked on a huge renovation and extension scheme to make the house what it is today.

Tickets are available for the "ghost hunts", which will be carried out by Sheffield-based group Seeking Spirit.

Paul Johnson, of the Wentworth Castle Trust, which is responsible for the upkeep of the grounds, said: "The gardens are renowned for strange happenings and unexplained sightings and the chance to investigate the castle represents a unique opportunity. "

The paranormal investigations will take place on February 13 and February 27 between 8pm and midnight.
