Cathedral finds home for lost soles

RIPON Cathedral is hoping to collect a thousand pairs of unwanted shoes – to create a unique community art installation.

On November 6, the cathedral will be celebrating the theme of pilgrimage by unveiling the shoe sculpture, designed to symbolise our walk with God in the footsteps of all the saints who have gone before us.

In keeping with the theme, the installation will move to various parts of the cathedral throughout the month of November and in the build-up to Christmas.

The young people of the congregation have already taken the lead by writing to prominent public figures to ask them to donate an old pair of shoes for the project.

Shoes can be brought in or posted to Ripon Cathedral, Minster Road, Ripon HG4 1QT, ideally before October 15. At the end of the installation, the shoes will be donated to charity or recycled.

The cathedral is also set to host a concert celebrating 500 years of choral music on October 22, in aid of the Organ Restoration Appeal.

Performed by local ensemble Cantares, the programme will showcase some of the most glorious music written over the last half-millennium. Tickets are priced at £10.
