Cathedral hosts consultation on £1m improvement plans

Sheffield Cathedral is holding a consultation for members of the public to find out more about the Gateway Project, in which more than £1m will be spent on improving the Grade One-listed building.

That project has been divided into three parts, the first of which – the Centenary Project – will see the floor of the building levelled and major improvements made to the heating, flooring and seating.

The Place For All People Project, which has just secured 31,900 of Lottery funding to work up plans for a 980,000 award, will create a new main entrance with display spaces, learning activities, signage and lighting.

Finally, the Organ Project will see the installation of a historic French pipe organ.

The public consultation event will take place in the 1554 Gallery of the cathedral at 2pm next Sunday.

A spokesman for the cathedral said: "The Dean of Sheffield, the Very Rev Peter Bradley, the Canon Precentor, Canon Simon Cowling, and the cathedral architect, Clive England, will be available to speak with members of the public about the opportunities the Gateway Project will create and to look at and discuss the plans which will also be on display.

"Those attending will also be given the opportunity for an informal tour of the cathedral."

Sheffield Cathedral is one of just five Grade One-listed buildings in the city, the others being the Town Hall, Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet and the parish churches at Ecclesfield and Bradfield.

It became the cathedral church for the newly created diocese of Sheffield in 1914.
