Cathedral selected to host jubilee service with Archbishop

It will be the last service led by the Dean of the cathedral, the Very Revd Dr David Ison, before he moves to St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

It is understood that Dr John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York, will preach from the Gospel of John during his sermon.

A spokesman for Bradford Cathedral said: “Bradford Cathedral is hosting the Diamond Jubilee Service for West Yorkshire on Sunday, May 13 in the presence of the Lord Lieutenant, who is the Queen’s representative for West Yorkshire.

“Attending will The Rt Revd Nick Baines, Bishop of Bradford. with invited clergy and guests from across the county including the High Sheriff and Under Sheriff of West Yorkshire, the Lord Mayor, Coun Naveeda Ikram and the Lord Mayors of Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield.

“The Dean of Wakefield, the Very Revd Jonathan Greener, and members of their choir are also attending, as Wakefield Cathedral going through a major programme of reordering works at the moment, preventing them holding a similar service.”

The service will begin with the massed choirs of Bradford and Wakefield cathedrals singing Sir Hubert Parry’s “I Was Glad”, which was also sung at the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton last year.

The Police Fanfare Trumpet Team from West Yorkshire Police will then accompany the singing of the national anthem.

Following the service a reception, arranged by the Mothers’ Union, is being held in South Asian arts organisation Kala Sangam’s St Peter’s House, during which tributes will be paid to the Dean of Bradford and his wife.
