Cathedral service to honour veterans

WAR veterans will be honoured at a service being held at Ripon Cathedral on Sunday, where VIPs will join fighting men and women both past and present.

North Yorkshire County Council chairman Caroline Seymour will join the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Anthony Wharton, the High Sheriff of North Yorkshire Richard Compton, and civic dignitaries from throughout the region for the 2.30pm service.

Beginning with a parade to the cathedral, the service will include readings by Skipton and Ripon MP Julian Smith and retired Wing Commander Peter West MBE.

Music will be led by the North Yorkshire Schools Orchestra and the Selby Music Centre Big Band and Choir. The Dean of Ripon, the Very Rev Keith Jukes, will give the Address.

Organiser Bernard Bateman said: "The service is being held in order that the county council can celebrate all those veterans who have served their country in such a distinguished way so that we can have a safe environment in which to live."
