Cathedral sings out in hunt for new generation of choristers

RIPON Cathedral has launched an appeal for a new generation of choristers to sing from its ancient stalls.

The renowned Cathedral Choir is looking for girls and boys between the ages of seven and 10 to join up and voice trials take place next week.

The cathedral's director of music, Andrew Bryden, said: "Being a chorister is a terrific experience.

"Our boys and girls receive professional training and gain musical and life skills that are only available through singing in a cathedral choir.

"When we audition potential choristers we are looking for children with a real enthusiasm for singing.

"Musical ability is important, but it need not preclude girls and boys who have not sung before or do not play a musical instrument."

Last year the Cathedral Choir performed on national TV and radio as well as at concerts and festivals across the north. Head chorister Thomas Willock was also a finalist in the BBC Radio 2 Chorister of the Year competition.

The voice trials, which are held every year, take place at the cathedral on Friday, February 4, and Saturday, February 5.
