Cathedral vice dean looking forward to minster move

The Bishop of Sheffield, Dr Steven Croft, has appointed Dr Paul Shackerley as the next vicar of Doncaster Minster.

Dr Shackerley was previously vice dean and canon pastor of Sheffield Cathedral, where he was particularly involved in developing the community resource centre and the cathedral's Archer Project for homeless people. In the past, he has been vicar of All Saints' with St Michael's in Chelmsford; a curate in Harlesden, London, and a Church Army officer.

A spokesman for the diocese of Sheffield said: "Paul has a wide range of experience and expertise which he will bring to his new post.

"Having recently researched the church's mission in urban contexts he is well aware of the challenges which he faces as he starts his new role at Doncaster Minster."

Dr Shackerley will take up his new position at a special "institution and induction" service in early September.

He said: "I am thrilled by the Bishop of Sheffield's invitation to serve the Minster of Doncaster as the next incumbent.

"I look forward to sharing the faithful ministries of Christians of the Minster, ecumenical and inter-faith partners.

"I am excited that I will be joining a team with vision, energy, and commitment, working diligently to build the church at the minster."

Clive Howarth, one of the church wardens at Doncaster Minster, added: "We eagerly look forward to the Rev Paul Shackerley being installed as the new vicar at Doncaster Minster and would like to welcome him to Doncaster."

The previous vicar at Doncaster Minster was the Rev Canon Christopher Smith, who retired in January. The 65-year-old spent nearly eight years at St George's Church, which achieved minster status during his time. The Rev Michael Rowberry then took over at the minster on a temporary basis until Dr Shackerley's appointment.
