CCTV reveals 'brutal and sustained attack'

Victim Anthony Schofield, 54, who had suffered a stroke a few months previously, was grabbed by 22-year-old Daniel Lockwood as he played on a gaming machine inside Ricky's Bar on Leeds Road, last July.

Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday how Lockwood, of Spen Valley Road, Dewsbury, had confronted Mr Schofield as he sat at the bar that night.

Although Mr Schofield, known as Little Tony, moved away from Lockwood and his four friends, the group later went out of the pub and prosecutor Stephen Wood alleged that they were deciding what was going to happen next.

The pub CCTV showed Lockwood and another man, Jamie Wood, 23, of Church Street, Crosland Moor, Huddersfield, coming back into the premises, and another friend, Daniel Mullins, standing by the entrance door.

Mr Wood said the footage showed Mr Schofield being frogmarched out of the pub by Lockwood and Wood and immediately followed by Mullins.

"Mr Schofield was brought outside and he was immediately put to the ground,'" said Mr Wood.

"He was then subjected to a brutal and sustained attack with kicks and punches to the body and head."

Lockwood, who has already admitted a charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, was described as the main protagonist in the attack, but Wood, who has pleaded guilty to the same offence, was also involved in punching and kicking the complainant.

Mr Wood alleged that Mullins, 23, of St James Way, Huddersfield, and Gareth Garside, 23, of Langdale Drive, Huddersfield, also joined in the violence.

The pair have both denied the charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, but Mr Wood said it was prosecution's case that it was a joint attack by the four men.

Mr Wood alleged that the CCTV showed Mullins going back to kick Mr Schofield a third time and he also threw a drink over the complainant as the group left the scene.

Mullins told the police there had been a "dispute" between Lockwood and Mr Schofield, but he maintained that he had tried to stop the attack.
