Celebration of cartoonist's work

Christine Rostron, assistant curator of exhibitions at the Ferens Art Gallery, Hull, admires a 'Dingbat', one of the famous pixie characters from the 1940s created by Hull-born cartoonist Ern Shaw (1891-1986) on show at an exhibition of his work entitled The Boy who Wouldn't Grow Up.

The exhibition celebrates the prolific cartoonist who offered a light-hearted look on a range of subjects from politics to sport in a 60-year career. Inspired by British cartoonist and caricaturist Tom Webster, Mr Shaw developed his talents at an early age and had his first drawing published at the age of 12.

Able to capture a humorous scene or sum up the outcome of a football match with ease, his simplistic style had many admirers. As well as regularly covering Hull's professional football and rugby clubs, Mr Shaw's drawings often featured animals, including Scamp the dog, based on his own hound Laddie.

To mark the launch, Guardian cartoonist Patrick Blower will be holding live drawing sessions demonstrating the more modern art of computer drawing.
