Cellist adds tiny new string to his bow

This five centimetre “doll’s house” Stradivarius violin is made from pearwood and ebony with real sheep gut and will set back prospective buyers £1,000.

The instrument is around 1/12 of the breadth of the full-size instrument and is one of a range of tiny collectables that David has made, ranging from rolling pins to toothbrushes and recorders.

The 75-year-old New Zealander, who now lives in Edinburgh, swapped career in 1983 after furniture he made for a doll’s house was spotted by Robert Clark, head of the Design Council.

Mr Edwards said: “I found out that I had a knack of working out how things could be made. You have to have very sensitive hands.

“You have to be able to concentrate for long, long periods of time and if you are playing something like a symphony you have to concentrate for long, long periods.”

His work has just gone on display in London.
