Centenary has the midas touch

GRANDMOTHER Lillian May Gibbons is celebrating not only her 100th birthday today but also a gold award for a display in her honour at the Chelsea Flower Show.

Granddaughter Patricia Gibbons selected 100 Japanese maples from the family business, Hippopottering Nursery at Haxey, Doncaster, to mark the occasion and picked up a gold in the process.

Steven and Elaine Hickman from Hoyland Plant Centre won a Silver-Gilt Flora for their agapanthus display while the amateur gardeners of the West Yorkshire group behind this year's display for the Hardy Plant Society were delighted with their Silver Flora award.

There were similar Silver Flora awards for Devine Nurseries of Withernsea Road, Hollym, East Yorkshire, for a display of allium and eremurus and Oak Tree Nursery, Barlow, Selby with an exhibit of ornamental grasses.

Primrose Bank nursery at Kexby, near York, picked up a Bronze Flora for a display of hardy perennials.
