Chance to be put in picture about £8m redevelopment of York Art Gallery

People are being given the chance to find out more about the £8m redevelopment of York Art Gallery.

An information evening, which is being held next month, will offer people the chance to learn more about the transformation of the building which is due to reopen in spring 2015.

Artist Mark Hearld will talk about his ideas for his opening exhibition and there will be garden tours, looking at the new gardens that will link the rear of York Art Gallery with the historic York Museum Gardens. The drop-in event is taking place at the Hospitium, in the Museum Gardens, on Tuesday September 3 from 5pm-8pm and is free to all.

Laura Turner, curator of art at the gallery, said: “This is a fantastic chance to come and meet the people busy working behind the scenes to transform York Art Gallery. Curators, the learning team, the gardens manager and the gallery manager are amongst the people who will be giving a series of short talks on their part in the development, as well as answering any questions visitors have.

“We are delighted that Mark Hearld is also attending to talk about his exhibition which will be one of the exhibitions that we open with in Spring 2015.”

When finished, the development of York Art Gallery will create 60 per cent more exhibition space.

The revamp will result in 60 per cent more exhibition space including the creation of three galleries on the ground floor. A newly-built first floor South Gallery and a new mezzanine gallery in the original Victorian roof space will become the home for the gallery’s nationally important British Studio Ceramic collections.
