Chance to buy a hall with pedigree

ONE of Todmorden’s best-known buildings, the former Oddfellows Hall in the town is being offered for sale for in excess of £470,000.

The building next to Todmorden Town Hall in Bridge Street is among the lots at the Eddisons auction in Leeds on February 23.

It has enjoyed a distinguished history since opening in October 1842 for the Todmorden Oddfellows.

The County Court held meetings here and in October 1851, Jane and William Macarthy set up a theatre in the Hall.

Ten years later a Wesleyan Association Chapel was sited there and at the end of the 19th century, it became the headquarters of the Todmorden Liberal Club.

The building is currently let to three tenants: Boots, Todmorden News Centre and the Platinum Lounge club, generating annual rent of £66,250, a potential return of over 14 per cent, says the auctioneers.

Tony Webber, of Eddisons, said: “This is well-known building which generates a very healthy return. I expect there to be plenty of interest from investors.”

The sale takes place at Leeds United Football Club, Elland Road, Leeds, at 12.30pm.
