Chance of free travel on heritage railway

A HERITAGE railway line is offering passengers the chance to set their own ticket price – even if that means free – in a bid to boost tourism in the Yorkshire Dales.

The Wensleydale Railway, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, has announced the bold move which managers claim no other railway operator in the UK has done by offering passengers the chance to pay what they feel their trip was worth.

The railway’s general manager, Nigel Park, confirmed the decision would allow passengers to travel for free, but he stressed it was aimed at showcasing the Dales.

He added: “In these days of ever increasing rail fares we thought we would do something a bit different. We hope people will come along, take a ride and then pay what they feel the trip was worth.

“We know it’s a slightly off-the -wall idea, and that some people will think we‘ve gone mad, but we want to show Wensleydale to more people than ever before, and we think that they will agree with us that it’s a great place to visit and will be happy to make a contribution after their trip.”

The offer will run from Saturday until Sunday, June 2, and Bolton Castle will give a 20 per cent reduction on admission with the production of a free rail ticket.

Services on the railway are running every day over the nine-day period with departures from Leeming Bar at 10am, noon and 3pm. More information is available at www.wensleydalerailway.com or by calling 08454 505474.
