Chance to learn more about sea defences

The £631,000 project, funded by the Environment Agency and Scarborough Borough Council, will see repairs carried out to a section of the wall near The Oasis Cafe and part of the sea defences close to the chalets beyond The Sands development.

On Thursday, December 6, the council is holding a drop-in public information evening at the Scarborough Bowls Centre in Peasholm Road from 5pm-9pm for residents to find out more about the project.

Work is due to get under way soon afterwards and is scheduled to be completed by contractors, Transcore, next spring.

Coun Mike Cockerill, cabinet member with responsibility for coast and flood protection, said: “It’s absolutely vital this work is carried out to protect the many large hotels and residential properties which would be at risk if there was a breach of the sea defences.”

The age of the original sea defence structures – not included in the Castle Headland coast protection works in 2002 – date to 1890. However, additions and improvements were made to various sections of the sea wall in the 1920s, 1950s and most recently the 1970s.

Behind the defences are coastal slopes consisting of glacial till overlaying sand and mudstone.

Immediately above the coastal slopes are many large hotels and properties, all potentially at risk.
