Chance of a night out with stars

TONIGHT’s new moon may offer the best chance for anyone taking part in the British Astronomical Society’s Star Count Week.

The event organised with the Campaign to Protect Rural England, aims to evaluate the impact of light pollution on views of the stars.

Pictured is the view looking south over the Somerset sky and shows how low clouds reflect light pollution from street lighting.

The brightest star in the night sky, Sirius (the Dog Star) rises low above St. Michael’s Tower on Glastonbury Tor with the constellation of Orion, centre, and the star clusters of Hyades, above right, and Pleiades, very top further right, clearly visible.

The society and CPRE are asking for people to count the stars within the constellation of Orion.
