Chance to suggest tasks for offenders

RESIDENTS in Bridlington are being asked to suggest projects they would like to see offenders doing as part of their punishment.

Possible options include community work such as litter picking, removing graffiti or redecorating community buildings.

The scheme, run by Humberside Probation Trust, already regularly sends teams of up to ten offenders to work improving paths and steps at Danes Dyke, at nearby Flamborough Head.

But now the public is being asked to nominate work in the resort, to be carried out over three days later this month.

Donna Taylor, community payback manager for the Humberside Probation Trust, said: "Community payback projects range from litter removal to clearing dense undergrowth, and redecorating community centres or removing graffiti and other environmental projects.

"Offenders usually work as part of a team, monitored by a supervisor, and will work all day. Additionally there are some opportunities for individual placements for low risk offenders."

To be considered, projects have to benefit the local community and no one must make a profit from the work. They must also be challenging, worthwhile and constructive.

Ideas need to be sent in by January 19.

Around 800,000 of free labour is given every year by offenders, who carry out 160,000 hours of work in the region.

The present scheme developed from community service that first introduced working offenders into the community in the mid 1970s.

Nominations can be sent to Phil Darby at the safe communities team at the East Riding Council, 22 Lairgate, Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, HU17 8EP.
