PLANS to improve bus services between Sheffield city centre and Woodhouse are set to go to public consultation.

The “Woodhouse Smart Route” proposals, which have been drawn up by Sheffield Council and the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, aim to reduce delays and also improve air quality and road safety.

Almost 1,000 bus journeys are made along the route every day, as people from Sheffield’s southern and eastern residential areas travel into the city centre to work.

The route includes some of the busiest roads in Sheffield, such as Staniforth Road and the A6178 Attercliffe Road.

Under the proposals, junction layouts and traffic lights will be improved to try to speed up the flow of traffic. Changes will also be made to parking arrangements and bus stops.

David Brown, director general of the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, said: “This route carries thousands of bus passengers every day and so it is important that we consult with people who live, work and travel through the area to ensure that the improvements reflect the interests of everyone.

“We are keen to hear what people have to say and welcome all comments and questions.”

Residents and businesses in the areas of Badger Road, Handsworth Road and Staniforth Road will receive leaflets encouraging them to have their say on the planned improvements.

Copies of these leaflets will also be made available at “community access points”, such as post offices, schools, community centres and libraries for those commuters who travel through the area.

The consultation period closes on March 5, and, once suggestions have been received, final plans will be drawn up. Further information about the Woodhouse Smart Route is available by calling 0845 303 0343.
