Chance to win taxi ride – in bomber

A CHARITY is auctioning off a taxi ride with a difference next month.

Among the unusual prizes going under the hammer at the 20th annual Sailors Families Society Sportsman's Lunch is a short drive in one of only three Lancaster bombers left in the country.

The Avro Lancaster Bomber NX611, Just Jane, taxies up and down the runway at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre using its four powerful engines.

Bill Waddington, senior director at Williamsons Solicitors, the main sponsor of the event, said: "It's the only place in the world you can see this performed on an original airfield."

Other auction prizes include the use of Lord Halifax's box at York Racecourse and football match tickets.

The society hopes to raise more than last year's total of 18,000, to provide winter clothing for children of seafarers.

Guest speaker is former footballer Ian St John who will sign a retro 1961 Liverpool shirt and a copy of his autobiography, which will also be auctioned off.

Tickets for the event, on October 15 at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel in Willerby, can be obtained at 48 each from Wendy Fish on Hull 01482 342331.
