'change can be very distressing'

Autism is a development disorder characterised by impaired social skills and obsessive, repetitive behaviour.

Lisa Pitkeathly, of the National Autistic Society, said: “Although it is a lifelong disability, the right support at the right time can make an enormous difference to people’s lives. Structure and stability are very important to people with autism. Change can be very disorientating and distressing and can cause a considerable amount of anxiety.”

Adults with autism frequently can’t get support because many councils don’t know how many people there are with autism, she added.
