Change of date for talent contest

A COMPETITION to find a Yorkshire city’s most talented musicians has shifted to the autumn this year in the hope of giving contestants the chance to showcase their talents on a national stage.

The Ripon Young Musicians of the Year contest will be held on October 14 and 15 after moving from its traditional spring slot.

Organisers have taken the decision to fit the competition in with other contests staged by Rotary clubs across the country to give Ripon’s entrants the chance to progress through district and regional heats to a national final.

The Ripon event was one of the first of its kind in Yorkshire, but the national finals organised by Rotary clubs have now been introduced within the last five years.

The entry criteria for the Ripon competition has also been changed to allow anyone aged 18 and under who lives within a 15-mile radius of the city centre to enter.

Contestants had previously had to live within the HG4 postcode, which does not extend very far south of the city.

The move of date is also aiming to prevent a clash with summer examinations in the hope of encouraging more entrants. Details are available at www.rymy.co.uk
