Changes at hospital after pensioner’s care issues

A HEALTH ombudsman found examples of poor care in the treatment of a 78-year-old dementia sufferer who died from a hospital superbug.

The watchdog says Leeds hospitals has made improvements since the death of Joyce Francks in 2009.

But the pensioner’s daughter Christine Edwards, who has pursued a long-running search for answers, is urging NHS bosses to tell patients what standards of care they can expect.

Mrs Francks, of Morley, was admitted to Leeds General Infirmary in January 2009 after breaking her wrist. She died two months later after picking up a C.diff infection.

After her death, her family complained first to Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and then to the Health Service Ombudsman, which now has said the hospitals trust has explained what improvements it had made.

A spokesman for the trust said the Ombudsman was reassured by the actions taken.
