Changes to improve policing service

Police chiefs hope changes to boundaries of some of the Wakefield district's Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) areas will improve service to residents.

From Tuesday Wakefield Central NPT will be expanded to incorporate the areas of Eastmoor, College Grove and Portobello, which are now part of Wakefield Rural NPT.

The area of Whitwood, formally part of Normanton and Featherstone NPT, will be incorporated into Castleford NPT.

Chief Inspector Derek Hughes, of Wakefield District Police, said: "This is an exciting opportunity for the Neighbourhood Policing Teams to build upon the committed and successful work already being done. The changes are fully supported by our partners which is very positive and further enhances our already very successful and rewarding joint working arrangements.

"Wakefield District Police are committed to continually improving the service delivered to residents and visitors of the district, these changes will enhance policing throughout the area.

"Neighbourhood policing is built on the sound foundations of local police being accessible and visible with the ability to deal swiftly and effectively with those issues that communities tell us matter most.

"To support the changes the constables and community support officers who have built the knowledge, network and trust of the communities will remain in their areas ensuring the familiar working arrangements that many of our officers have developed continue. The changes will also ensure we maximise working arrangements with partner agencies further enhancing our joint initiatives."
