Changes to refuse collection times

NEW waste collection times were brought into force across York yesterday in a bid to save the city council more than £300,000 a year.

More than 1,450 households will see collections moved to a different day or week as part of the overhaul, which focuses on recycling rather than sending waste to landfill.

Refuse crews have been given new “more efficient” routes, which the council said will save fuel, as well as reduce emissions from refuse vehicles.

With less waste for landfill being produced and with more and more waste being reused or recycled, the council is able to introduce the new refuse collection schedules.

The council said the changes will generate annual savings of £313,000. Janet Looker, the council’s cabinet member for environmental services, said: “I am delighted that we are making these changes.

“It recognises the fact that the residents of York are really working hard at the recycling.

“Also, giving the crews more efficient routes means they will use less fuel and cause less pollution – this is a real, added bonus.”
