Channel 4 to broadcast Sheen’s Masters of Sex

An acclaimed series which stars Michael Sheen as a pioneering sex expert has been snapped up by Channel 4.

Masters of Sex features 44-year-old Welsh actor Sheen as gynaecologist William Masters, who carried out groundbreaking research – with partner Virginia Johnson – into arousal and sexual behaviour during the late 1950s and beyond.

The series has already been among the recipients of the Critics’ Choice television award for most exciting new series, despite not even debuting on TV in the US – where it has been made – until late September.

The 12-part series looks at the real-life dramas of Masters and Johnson (played by Lizzy Caplan from True Blood), as well as the controversial research they carried out into desire, intimacy and orgasms.

Sheen, whose notable appearances include his roles in The Queen, Frost/Nixon and the Twilight movies, has become an increasingly popular figure in the US.

The new series will be screened in the UK shortly after its US premiere.

Channel 4’s chief creative officer Jay Hunt said: “Masters of Sex is an incredibly classy period drama which provides a fascinating insight into the scientific study of human sexuality.

“With compelling performances from Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan as Masters and Johnson, it’s an unmissable treat.”
