Charities get giant boost from Roald Dahl evening

CHARITIES in Rotherham are to benefit from the generosity of hundreds of business people, who dug deep to make donations at an annual event held in the town last weekend.

About 430 people attended a charity ball which was hosted by Chris MacCormac, who is the current Rotherham president of the Rotherham and Barnsley Chamber of Commerce.

The event was themed around the classic Roald Dahl children's story Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and members of the chamber dressed up as characters from the story.

Dinner was served at the Magna Centre in Templeborough, and the venue was transformed into what organisers called a "fantasy wonderland of colour, taste and fun".

Young people from a local theatre school also took part as characters from the book, including some who dressed as a troop of the miniature stars of the story, the Oompa-Loompas.

Over 3,000 was raised on the evening for the Chamber's charity fund, which has raised about 100,000 for good causes in Rotherham over recent years.

Mr MacCormac said: "The night was a huge success and it was great to see so many smiling faces enjoying the escapism and fantasy in Rotherham's very own Chocolate Factory. We have had lots of positive feedback and are delighted the event gave our guests a chance to forget all about business for the evening, relax and enjoy themselves.

"I have to say a large thank you to all guests and sponsors for their generous response in supporting the event, and to the Gillian Banks Theatre School for their excellent entertainment.

"Once again, the ball has proved that Rotherham is a town full of people who care passionately about their local community, their donations will support the fantastic charitable activities which take place in Rotherham."
