Charity reveals revamp plan for nature reserve

THE RSPB has unveiled plans to revamp the visitor centre at its Bempton Cliffs nature reserve.

The charity is hoping to expand the car park and create sheltered areas where visitors can learn more about the reserve near Bridlington, as well as provide new facilities for staff and volunteers.

Keith Clarkson, senior site manager at Bempton Cliffs, said: “There are around a quarter of a million seabirds at Bempton Cliffs, which make the site one of the UK’s greatest wildlife spectacles. This has resulted in visitor numbers growing to 76,000 per year since the RSPB took over management of the site in the 1960s.

“However, the wear and tear is beginning to show so we want to ensure that the visitor experience matches the quality of the wildlife spectacle and that our visitors are able to discover more about what makes Bempton Cliffs so special.”

The RSPB hopes the changes and a new programme of activities could attract an extra 10,000 visitors every year.

A planning application has been submitted to East Riding Council.
