Chatsworth unveils treasures ahead of 'once in lifetime sale'

FURNITURE from a state dining room in the Piccadilly home of the Dukes of Devonshire was unveiled yesterday ahead of what has been billed as a "once in a lifetime attic sale".

The pieces have been arranged to recreate a scene which greeted guests at Devonshire House, which was the family's London residence until it was demolished in the 1920s.

Many members of the family entertained in the opulent surroundings, including the extravagant Duchess Georgiana, and some of the pieces she used are now offered for sale.

Staff from the auctioneer Sotheby's have set out the items, which have estimated values ranging from 20 to 200,000 in a 20,000 sq ft marquee on the Chatsworth estate.

The auction, which will take place next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday,

also includes personal memorabilia from members of the family, including current Dowager Duchess Deborah Cavendish.

Most of the objects for sale were recently rediscovered in the attics at Chatsworth, in the Peak District, having been transferred from other family properties in England and Ireland.

The 12th Duke of Devonshire, Peregrine Cavendish, yesterday toured the marquee and said it was "fascinating to see long-hidden treasures" displayed as they would have been in their heyday.

He added: "The proceeds of the sale will be used to further some projects both at Chatsworth and on our other estates, which we are delighted that this sale of items will accelerate."

Entrance to the public viewing and auction for up to two people is by purchase of the 30 sale catalogue, which is available from either the Chatsworth Estate or Sotheby's.

The pre-sale exhibition will be open tomorrow between 9am and 4.30pm, on Saturday and Sunday between 9am and 5.30pm and on Monday between 9am and 2pm.
