Chatsworth’s water features hit by drought

ORDINARILY spectacular water features at Chatsworth House, seat of the Duke of Devonshire, are now only being switched on at limited times owing to drought conditions.

A spokesman for the stately home, near Bakewell, said: “With very little rain during June and July this year our water supplies are running very low.

“During the five months from the end of February we have only had 15.9 cm – just over six inches – of rain compared with 23.5cm last year and 36.3cm in 2009.

“Our water features rely on water from the lakes above Chatsworth, so in an effort to conserve water, the Emperor Fountain and Cascade will only be operating from noon to 1pm and from 3pm to 4pm.

“We apologise for the inconvenience and hope that visitors will still be able to enjoy the garden and view the features during the specified time.”
