Cheap loans scheme to buy bicycles

CUT-PRICE deals are due to be offered on bicycles through loans from the county’s credit union to help curb traffic congestion on York’s historic streets.

York Council is working alongside the North Yorkshire Credit Union to introduce the low interest loan scheme which will allow more of the city’s residents to purchase a bike.

The initiative is being developed alongside cycle retailers in the city as part of the multi-million pound Cycling City project.

A report on the Cycling City scheme will be considered by senior members on York Council’s executive at a meeting on Tuesday next week, and includes an update on a series of other projects which are already underway.

Following the freezing winter weather, the council has bought a small maintenance vehicle to carry out repairs on the city’s cycle routes.

Major improvements along Fulford Road, the main route into the city centre, are due to be completed by the end of this month and will see additional cycle lanes introduced.

York is one of 12 locations in Britain to have been awarded cycling town or city status in 2008.
