Checkpoints 'in the wrong place'

SOME of the roadside checkpoints used by the Government's vehicle inspection agency are in the wrong places, a Government spending watchdog said today.

The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency's (VOSA) ability to target risky commercial vehicles entering the UK is limited, added the report from the National Audit Office (NAO).

The report also said the agency's delegated powers to stop vehicles are being provided inconsistently across Britain.

But the NAO did say that VOSA had increased the number of dangerous commercial vehicles that it removes from the roads from 28,900 in 2007/08 to 36,500 in 2008/09.
